Research tool

DLS Doctor is a research tool. It checks the quality of DLS and TEM data and suggests likely causes of problems based on published guidance (Filippov et al., Mater. Horiz. 2023) and standard practice. Results are estimates, not certified measurements, and do not replace expert judgement, validated methods or regulatory testing.

Not for clinical or regulatory decisions

Do not use DLS Doctor as the sole basis for clinical, diagnostic, safety or regulatory decisions. Verify important results by repeat measurement or an independent method.

Thresholds and calculations

  • Rules taken from the paper are labelled with their page. Thresholds labelled “standard practice” are configurable guidance, not standards.
  • TEM–DLS mismatch categories (agreement, minor, medium, major) are guidance built from published comparisons; no published standard exists.
  • The number-weighted DLS size depends on the particle refractive index you enter (Mie theory); without it, a rough Rayleigh estimate is used.
  • Automatic TEM particle detection can miss or merge particles, especially in crowded or low-contrast images. Check the overlay.
  • Flow and mixing estimates (Reynolds number, mixing time) are simplified models.
